Where to go, if you have just one day in Slovenia

There are different places in Slovenia worth of visiting. But if you have only one shot, I would chose the tour from Kranjska gora over Vršič mountain pass to Trenta with finish at Bovec. I can say this is one of the most scenic roads in Slovenia. The way goes over the highest road pass in Slovenia, the pass with the backdrop of jagged mountains of Julian Alps and through Trenta valley, which is somehow stuck in the past, so you can really enjoy the nature and the traditional life of the locals.

Starting at Kranjska gora, well known winter resort. Some of you probably know Kranjska gora after FIS world cup in slalom and giant slalom, some other maybe after ski-jumping in Planica. Both competitions are organized every year. Soon after leaving Kranjska gora, the road starts to climb. Entering Pišnica river valley and passing Jasna lake. It has no connection with the river flowing by. To the top of Vršič around 24 zig-zags leads Russian Road, named after Russian prisoners of war, who have built the road. The road was of strategic importance of the Austrian army, used for supplying the army on Soča front. You can make your first stop at Russian Chapel. Russian Chapel is dedicated to all dead Russian prisoners of war, not only those, who died in a snow slide under Mt. Mojstrovka (all together 270 dead), but to all dead Russian prisoners constructing the road. It was built in 1917. It is completely wooden, made of larch wood and spruce bark. All the way to the top of Vršič we have splendid view to the north face of Mt. Prisojnik and east face of Mt. Mojstrovka. Vršič pass is between the two. At Koča na gozdu you can stop for a traditional Slovenian lunch: jota and žganci or Carniolian sausage. When you have the best view to Prisojnik, informational boards are explaining about vegetation, geology and the north face of Prisojnik. Try to find Prisojnik’s window and maid Ajdovska deklica.

Just under Vršič is first military cemetery from World War 1 and another mountain hut, Erjavčeva koča. Vrišič is a great starting point for hikes to Mojstrovka, Jalovec or Prisojnik. All three are over 2.000 metres high. If you are not in such a good condition, you can just walk to Slemenova špica, from where you have unforgettable view to Planica and Tamar valleys, Mt. Jalovec on one side and Mt. Mojstrovka on the other. From Vršič you can also climb to mountain hut Poštarski dom and see some remainings of an old cable way passing Vršič, in use during World War 1, built before the road. Between World War 1 and World War 2 Vršič was on the border between Yugoslavia and Italy. Present mountain hut Tičarjev dom was border check point.

From the top you have another 26 zig-zags to Trenta. In Trenta you have lot to visit and see. First monument to Julius Kugy, mountaineer, researcher of the useless world of the Julian Alps and writer. At the head of Trenta valley is a source of Soča river, emerald river, where endemic Soča trout lives. From there walk to Kekec farm, a farm, where a legendary Slovene movie about young boy Kekec was filmed. Just couple of kilometres from the source you can refresh in a cold wind blowing from Mlinarica ravine. In botanical garden Alpinum Julijana you can find almost all plants growing in Triglav National Park and after you turn the 50th zig-zag is Trenta House, Triglav National Park informational centre of the Park and a museum showing a hard life in Trenta. Down the valley you pass by numerous scattered farms on the narrow river terrace and the slopes of the surrounding mountains. At the village of Soča is the Church of St. Joseph, which contains an interesting painting of the Devil (the painter was Tone Kralj), resembled to the Benito Mussolini. Behind the church is a military cemetery where Austrian and Italian soldiers killed during the WWI are buried. Concrete crosses are aligned along the enclosure and above the cemetery lies a large cross composed of rocks. The most beautiful gorge is carved by Soča river near the Soča village, big trough is 750 meters long, 15 meters deep and in sometimes with river banks only 2 meters apart. Gorge ends at the beginning of Lepena valley. Big trough could be seen from  footbridge.

In rural homes, awareness and knowledge about healthy and energy efficient construction were a necessity, due to extremely harsh weather conditions. The Bovec house has a stable on the ground floor, outer stairs and an isle, locally called ganjk. Inside the house, three functional parts are arranged according to the height. On the ground floor there is a stable with farm rooms, above them there are dwelling rooms, and the attic is used for storing hay. The house is usually situated on a sloping area and therefore the lower part with farm rooms at the rear of the house is often completely dug in to the hill-side. Directly from the ganjk you enter to the kitchen which function as entrance, central and dwelling room of the house. At the side of this central room, chamber is situated, which in its final form was followed by another, symmetrically added chamber.

Our tour ends at Bovec, charming alpine town under Kanin mountains. In the Kanin mountains are Slovenian deepest caves: Čehi 2 (1500 m and more), Črnel abyss (1198 m) in Skalar abyss (911 m). More than 400 caves and abysses are found and registered, on some places even up to 80 caves per square kilometre. Unfortunately it was in recent few decades struck three times by an earthquake. First in 1976, the second time in 1998 and the last time in 2004. The main industry is tourism, Kanin ski resort and water sports on Soča river.

Delovna miza
